At BROWNS English Language School, students in the High School Preparation (HSP) program not only focus on learning academic English and completing assessment tasks but also engage in Project Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a method of instruction that integrates content and language, allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills to create real-world products. This approach not only reinforces their learning but also nurtures essential 21st-century skills such as digital literacy, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration. In this blog post, we will explore a recent PBL project undertaken by HSP students at BROWNS, centered around the topic of food and cooking.
The Learning Process
Throughout the week, students in the HSP program delved into various aspects of the food and cooking theme. They expanded their vocabulary, practiced listening and reading for detail, engaged in class discussions to enhance fluency and critical thinking, and examined the structure and features of a recipe. All these components served as building blocks for their final project.
The Collaborative Project: Making Lamingtons
To consolidate their learning and put their skills into practice, HSP students across both BROWNS campuses in Brisbane and Gold Coast participated in a collaborative project. Working in small groups, they wrote and followed a recipe to make Lamingtons, a traditional Australian sweet. The project not only required them to apply their knowledge of English but also fostered teamwork and cooperation.
Incorporating Language Skills and Technology
As part of their project, the students were tasked with creating a tutorial video that showcased the process of making Lamingtons. This video served as an opportunity for them to incorporate the vocabulary and language structures they had learned throughout the week. By using digital tools and technology, the students honed their digital literacy skills and enhanced their ability to communicate effectively in a multimedia format.
Sora’s Project Video
One remarkable example of the students’ efforts is the tutorial video created by Sora, a 13-year-old student from Japan, studying at BROWNS English Language School for three weeks during her holidays. Sora had previously attended BROWNS in January and was so captivated by the experience that she decided to return. You can watch her video below.
