Australia Junior Holiday

Week 1 of BROWNS’ Australia Junior Holiday Program on the Gold Coast

Welcome to our July-August Junior Holiday Program on the Gold Coast. The first week has been filled with exciting activities and enriching experiences designed to help our students immerse themselves in the Australian culture and enhance their English skills. Join us as we take a look at each day’s highlights and the unique opportunities our students enjoyed throughout the first week.

Monday 15/07/2023

Our week began with a school tour, giving students their first opportunity to see their new classroom, the kitchen, the reception area, and all the amenities that BROWNS English Language School (BROWNS) offers. Following the tour, they received a comprehensive introduction to the Australia Junior Holiday Program, including the schedule, activities inside and outside the school, and the rules. Students were also given their uniforms, ID cards, and class materials.

The first day’s focus was on Australia, where students explored various aspects of this fascinating country. They learned about its cities, states, holidays, culture, food, traditions, and wildlife. As part of the lesson, they created maps of Australia, illustrating and noting interesting facts about different cities and states. During class, the students introduced themselves, fostering new connections. They practised English while learning interesting facts about their classmates, who come from diverse countries and cultures.

In the afternoon, everyone participated in a highly successful Trivia competition. The students engaged in an extensive quiz game about Australia, and the winners were awarded great prizes. It was an excellent start to the program!

The second day was exceptional. The topic, “My Classroom,” provided students with the opportunity to delve deeper into learning and the school environment. They covered subjects such as school subjects, stationery, materials, activities, and imperative verbs. The students participated in various games related to this topic, making English practice enjoyable and engaging.

In the afternoon, the students had a completely different and wonderful experience. They visited Surfers Paradise to play games at the Arcade. It was a fantastic afternoon filled with play and laughter. The students spent hours speaking English with their classmates while enjoying this fun activity.

The third day was also very special. In the morning, the theme was “Routine,” allowing students to learn about daily activities and the school environment as well as grammar points such as Present Simple. They discussed topics like daily schedules, common tasks, and commands. Various engaging activities related to routines helped make English practice both fun and informative.

In the afternoon, the students enjoyed a unique and enriching experience focused on Aboriginal art. They learnt about the history and significance of this art form and participated in a dot painting workshop. Students then created their own dot paintings and learnt about the cultural importance behind this beautiful tradition. The students spent hours speaking English while enjoying this creative and cultural activity.

On the fourth day of the program, the topic was “My Country” so students had the chance to share their experience and knowledge about their own culture and nation. This was a very special moment because they talked about everything they love about their countries, using English to express themselves and to explain their traditions. The kids were able to learn about Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Brazil.

That afternoon, the teacher and students headed to Broadwater Parklands to play tennis. Over there, two coaches explained all the rules and students had a real class about this amazing sport. While practising physical activities and working as a team, students were able to speak English outside the classroom in a very productive way.

The last day of classes in the first week was about Aussie Animals. Students learnt about many different native animals such as kangaroos, koalas, red panda, dingo and more. They read texts about them, answered to worksheets, played different games and took long discussions about a variety of animals. They also watched a video produced by the Australian Government about the expression “G’Day” as well as videos that explain the diversity of Australian fauna and videos about everything that they needed to learn about Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

During the afternoon activities, students went to Broadwater Parklands and practised many different sports. They played soccer, basketball, volleyball and practised some running too. The weather was perfect, so they were able to enjoy the sunny day on the Gold Coast with their friends and speak English. After the activities, some of them also had ice cream and took many pictures.

The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary visit was an amazing experience for the students. After learning so much inside the classroom about Australia, its culture and its animals, it was time for some real action. They spent the whole Saturday learning about the animals, taking pictures of koalas, kangaroos, red pandas and even crocodiles.

We had lunch together, as a whole class, at the park and shared some of the pictures and the good experiences. The weather was perfect again, so we were able to enjoy the last day of this perfect week. It was definitely a unique experience for these young students to immerse themselves into Australian wildlife and culture.

As we wrap up an incredible first week of our Australia Junior Holiday Program on the Gold Coast, we are thrilled to see our students actively engaging, learning, and making new friends. From exploring Australian culture and wildlife to participating in dynamic activities both inside and outside the classroom, it has been a week full of unforgettable experiences. We invite you to join us back here again next week as we continue our journey with more exciting adventures and learning opportunities in Week 2. Stay tuned for our next recap and see how our students continue to thrive and grow in their new environment.
