Week 4: English Lessons and Whale Watching on the Gold Coast
Week 4 of our Junior Holiday Program on the Gold Coast was an exciting journey through Australia’s culture, traditions, and natural wonders. From exploring iconic Australian foods to learning about the importance of relationships, the students immersed themselves in a variety of engaging activities designed to enhance their English skills while experiencing the best of what the Gold Coast has to offer. Each day brought new adventures, culminating in a breathtaking whale-watching excursion that left everyone in awe of Australia’s natural beauty. Here’s a look at the memorable experiences our students enjoyed this week.
Monday, 5th August 2024
Monday was all about Australian food. The students explored the diverse culinary traditions of Australia, learning about iconic dishes and ingredients. They discussed their favourite foods and compared them with traditional dishes from their home countries.
In the afternoon, the students had the exciting task of making the famous Australian Lamington. They not only learned how to bake but also created a video documenting the process, combining cooking skills with creativity and English practice.
Tuesday, 6th August 2024
The theme was ‘My Family and Friends.’ Students discussed the importance of relationships, shared stories about their families and friends, and learned vocabulary related to these topics. They engaged in activities that highlighted the value of connections and how different cultures celebrate family and friendship.
In the afternoon, they went tenpin bowling, where they enjoyed friendly competition and used English in a relaxed, social setting.
Wednesday, 7th August 2024
The focus was on holidays and traditions. Students explored various holidays and traditions from around the world, including those from their own cultures. They discussed how these celebrations are observed and learned related vocabulary.
The afternoon was filled with games and table tennis, giving the students another opportunity to bond, practise English, and enjoy some fun activities.
Thursday, 8th August 2024
The theme was a little bit different: Gold Coast tourism. The students learned about the popular tourist attractions and activities that make the Gold Coast a top destination. They created brochures and presentations to showcase the highlights of the area, practising their descriptive and persuasive language skills.
During the afternoon, they enjoyed mini golf, which added a playful twist to the day’s theme while encouraging teamwork and conversation in English.
Friday, 9th August 2024
The day was dedicated to whales. Students learned about the magnificent creatures that migrate along the Gold Coast, discussing their habits, habitats, and the importance of conservation. This topic was not only informative but also helped to raise awareness about environmental issues.
The afternoon was spent at a picnic in the park, where students relaxed, played games, and continued to practise their English in a beautiful outdoor setting.
Saturday, 10th August 2024
Finally, the week concluded with an unforgettable excursion to watch the whales off the Gold Coast. The students were thrilled to witness these majestic animals in their natural habitat, making it a perfect finale to a week filled with learning, adventure, and cultural immersion.
