Explore Melbourne

Hello and welcome to week 2 of BROWNS’ School Holiday Program (Junior Holiday Program & Primary Holiday Program) recap! This week we covered a range of exciting topics from Australian culture and history to holidays and sports. We have practiced our reading, writing and speaking skills through worksheets, presentations and games! We have also learnt and honed our baking skills and art talents from our afternoon activities. Our excursions this week have allowed us to explore Melbourne some more, and get to know each other. We’ve been ice skating, enjoyed baking and have even played laser tag! Keep reading to hear about the week:

Monday, 20th January 2025:
This Monday we had some new faces in class, we welcomed our new classmates by asking questions and introducing ourselves. We then began our topic- meals! We started by answering the questions about our most favourite and least favourite meals. We got to know each other better and practiced speaking through a class survey. We asked each other about where we eat, what we eat and when we eat. After this, we got into some role-play! Some students pretended to be diners whilst the other students pretended to be waiters! We then designed our very own menu for a restaurant. We became restaurant critics and practiced adjectives by reviewing our classmates’ menus!

After lunch, we learnt about Australian food by baking Lamingtons! We all gathered in the school kitchen and reviewed the recipe. We made some delicious Lamingtons and had a great time making them together.

Tuesday, 21st January 2025:
Today our topic was ‘Australian Animals’. We had a great day learning about all the different types of animals, their names, what they eat and where they live. We started our lesson by guessing different animals’ names. We even made up our own animal and explained to the class what special skills it had, some animals could fly, others were fast, and some could even swim AND fly! Afterwards, we learnt about Australian animals; the dingo, koala, emu, kangaroo and kookaburra. We read about these animals and made our own animal fact files. We tested our knowledge with worksheets and quizzes!

In the afternoon, we went ice skating! We had such a great time. After getting our skates and helmets on we hit the ice! We all helped each other and by the end, we could all skate on our own! It was a great time with lots of laughs.

Wednesday, 22nd January 2025:
Wednesday’s topic was Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. We spent the morning learning about different Aboriginal Dreamtime stories including the The Rainbow Serpent and Tiddalick the Frog. We listened to these different stories and discussed what we thought. We then looked at some Aboriginal Dreamtime artwork relating to these stories. We practiced our comprehension by deciding which images represented different events in the story.

We took inspiration from the connection between stories and pictures to make our own story about the animals we learnt about on Tuesday with an accompanying storyboard.

After lunch, we played Bingo! Before we started the game, we made sure we were all aware of the rules and how the game worked. We then got our bingo cards, and the numbers started rolling in! We had a great time, and the winners even got some prizes!

Thursday, 23rd January 2025:
Thursday’s topic was holidays! We started the day with an A-Z of world countries to get us thinking about where we’ve been and where we’d like to go. We then discussed our own holiday experiences with each other. After this, we practiced some grammar. We asked questions relating to holidays and activities using our ‘be going to’ questions. After this we focused on some writing. We analyzed the features of postcards including the informal language, the structure and the topics postcards typically cover. We then wrote our very own postcards to friends and family back home about our time in Australia.

In the afternoon we went on an adventure to play some laser tag! We got into teams and worked together to see which team could get the highest score! We then played again in a huge competition and worked individually to see who the ultimate laser tag champion was!

Friday, 27th January 2025:
Today our topic was sports! We started our day by listing as many sports as we could think of, we had some great answers such as baseball, football, yoga and karate! We then learnt some more vocab and new sports, we learnt about water skiing, parachuting and even hang-gliding! We tested our knowledge with a game of charades and then a crossword. To increase our knowledge and understanding further we completed a research project. Each student was given a sport to research, we then made information posters on these sports and presented it to the class. We learnt a lot from each other and was great to display all of our hard work!

After lunch we headed out to the park where we enjoyed the Australian sunshine and scenery. We competed in a scavenger hunt and practiced some of the new sports we’d learnt about in class! It was a great way to finish the week!

Saturday, 28th January 2025:
This weekend we went to Collingwood Children’s Farm. We had a great day interacting with, and learning about the animals. Our first stop was the goat pen. There were loads of goats and we were allowed to pet them all! After this, we went to meet the horses. We learnt how to approach horses safely and got to pet two different ponies! After this we saw the animals we all agreed were the cutest; the Guinea pigs!

We had a fantastic day meeting all the fun animals and enjoying the Australian sun!

We had a great second week at BROWNS English Language School! We got to know more about each other and had more opportunities to work collaboratively and learn about Australia and Australian culture. We covered some fascinating topics from Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime stories to sports and holidays. From learning new vocabulary, to practicing different writing styles and even completing our own research project we’ve had an entertaining and informative week. We’ve had a great experience both in the classroom and on the excursions where we got to explore Melbourne. We can’t wait to learn more and make more memories next week!
