Junior Holiday Program (JHP)
Week 1 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) was packed with learning, creativity, and exciting experiences around Melbourne. Students enjoyed a great balance of classroom lessons and hands-on activities, giving them plenty of opportunities to practise English while building confidence and friendships. Here’s what our JHP students got up to in Week 1
🗺️ Monday: Australian Geography & Aussie Olympics
The week kicked off with a focus on Australian geography. Students learned about Australia’s states and capitals and created their own colourful maps.
In the afternoon, the classroom turned competitive with our Aussie Olympics! Students competed in teams in a variety of fun games, including Pin the City on the Map, a flag trivia challenge, and spelling words using their bodies. Teamwork, laughter, and English filled the room — and everyone enjoyed a chocolate prize at the end!
🌆 Tuesday: Melbourne Tourism & Skydeck
Tuesday’s topic was Melbourne tourism. Students learned about famous landmarks around the city and used this knowledge to design their own tourism brochures.
The learning came to life during a visit to the Melbourne Skydeck, where students spotted landmarks they had studied from above. It was an exciting way to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.
👨👩👧 Wednesday: My Family & Art Projects
Midweek lessons focused on family vocabulary and speaking skills. Students practised talking about their families and created their own family trees.
Creativity continued with an art project day, starting with fun art-themed games like Pictionary. Students then worked together in groups to create two large class murals, encouraging collaboration and creative expression in English.
🎵 Thursday: Music, Arts & Bowling
On Thursday, students explored music and the arts. They listened to Australian songs, learned key lyrics and vocabulary, and shared their opinions. Students also conducted a class survey about music preferences and wrote about the results.
The afternoon activity was bowling, which was a big hit! Students practised social English while cheering each other on and enjoying friendly competition.
🎨 Friday: Graffiti, ACMI & Hosier Lane
The final topic of the week was graffiti. Students learned about the history of graffiti and street art in Melbourne before creating their own classroom graffiti wall featuring everyone’s name.
The day continued with a visit to ACMI, followed by a walk through Hosier Lane, where students saw Melbourne’s most famous graffiti up close. It was a perfect way to connect art, culture, and language learning.
✅ That’s a wrap on Week 1!
Week 1 of JHP was a fantastic start, filled with engaging lessons, creative projects, exciting excursions, and plenty of English practice in real-life settings. We’re looking forward to even more learning and adventures in the weeks ahead!
