Sounds, Science, and School Fun Together
Week 4 in the PSP and PSP+ programs was all about sound, creativity, and community. Students explored English through science, music, art, and exciting hands-on challenges, building confidence while learning in dynamic and engaging ways. Here’s a snapshot of our week:
π΅ Monday: Welcome & Introduction to Sound
We welcomed new students with introductions and worked together to create new school rules and posters, helping everyone feel part of the community while practising speaking and communication skills. The week’s theme β sound and noise β was introduced, setting the stage for an exciting week of discovery.
In Indoor Play, students enjoyed English games to practice names, speaking, memory, and confidence in a fun, relaxed environment.
In PE, students warmed up, followed instructions in English, and worked as a team through throw-and-catch games and musical chairs, reinforcing language through active play.
The day concluded with a walk to the park, giving students practice with outdoor vocabulary and movement-based learning.
πͺ Tuesday: Making Music & Patterns
Tuesday began with vocabulary introduction and listening activities, building on the sound theme. Students engaged with new words and concepts related to noise and music.
In preparation for an upcoming farm visit, students watched an educational video and answered questions, connecting their learning to real-world experiences.
In Art, students got creative by making their own tambourines, combining crafts with the week’s sound theme.
In Maths, the focus was on repeated patterns. Students identified patterns and created their own, developing logical thinking and sequencing skills.
The afternoon featured an exciting team activity where students became musicians! Working in teams, they created their own band using recycled materials, wrote a song about school rules, and performed for their classmates β bringing together creativity, collaboration, and confident English use.
π Wednesday: Soundscapes & Aboriginal Music
Wednesday began with vocabulary warmers, followed by reading and listening activities focusing on the going to future tense β helping students talk about plans and predictions.
In Science, students dove deep into the topic of sound. They listened to and took notes on a ‘how sound is made’ presentation, then went on a soundscape walk around the school, writing down information about the different sounds they heard. They completed worksheets to reinforce their understanding of how sound travels and works.
In HASS, students learned about the history of Aboriginal Peoples’ music. They listened to a presentation, asked thoughtful questions, listened to traditional music, and worked together to create informative posters.
In Writing, students listened to different types of music and explored emotions, writing about how the music made them feel β connecting sound to feelings and personal expression.
π Thursday: Stories, Grammar & Science Challenges
Thursday began with a vocabulary recap quiz and the introduction of new vocabulary words. Students worked on reading, listening, and going to questions in the future tense, with extension worksheets for higher levels.
In Reading and Literacy, students worked with vocabulary warmers and explored Unit 5 of their literacy book.
Phonics focused on the ‘ou’ sound, with students reading stories, completing worksheets, and writing their own words and sentences using the sound.
Speaking and listening activities focused on story comprehension and explanation tasks, building oral communication skills.
The highlight of the day was the Science Challenge inspired by The Three Little Pigs β students worked in teams to build the strongest house, testing their engineering skills and scientific thinking while using English throughout the challenge.
β³ Friday: Reading, Activities & Outdoor Fun
Friday began with a spelling test and reading activities to finish the core book, celebrating the week’s learning achievements.
Students enjoyed a session of Information Communication, listening to a presentation about Australia and creating fact files and infographics β combining research, design, and language skills.
The day was packed with exciting activities, including mini golf, where students practised following instructions and spatial language, and Minute to Win It β a series of mini games played in teams that encouraged quick thinking, cooperation, and English communication.
Students also enjoyed doll painting, expressing their creativity while using descriptive language.
The week concluded with a relaxing park picnic, giving students the opportunity to socialise, play, and use English in a natural, outdoor setting.
