In March, as part of our work with the local community, BROWNS invited the Surf Lifesaving Foundation to come and deliver a series of presentations to both our ELICOS campuses on the importance of water safety to everyone living in Queensland. The surf lifesavers, Kristy and Scott, gave plenty of good advice to both our young learner and adult students:
- Never go into the water past your chest unless you are an amazing swimmer
- Always swim between the flags
- Wave and scream if you are in trouble
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a surf lifesaver
- If you get bitten by jellyfish, go straight to the lifesaver and get some ice
- Don’t be afraid of sharks – there is a much higher chance of being killed by a coconut!
This is what three of our EAP students said about this activity:
“Last Thursday, lifesaver ‘’Scott’’ from Surf Lifesaving QLD, talked to us about swimming between the flags and he showed us the different flags showing bad weather, sharks and waves. Also, he taught us about the safe place to swim to avoid rips and surfers. He told us we had to call out for help whenever we need it and to stay in water up to our chest only. He also told us to wear suncream, a hat, sunglasses and a shirt whenever we go to the beach. You should not swim alone!” By Sunny (EAP4), Max (EAP1) & Jerry (EAP1)
We look forward to the practical session soon down by the beach. BROWNS contributed a donation to the Surf Lifesaving Foundation as part of our Elevate Programme to help the community.
