Our Advanced English Academic Practice (AEAP) students on the Gold Coast recently took part in an enriching educational excursion to HOTA – Home of the Arts, one of the city’s most vibrant cultural precincts. HOTA is known for its world-class exhibitions, contemporary galleries, live performances and its unique role in celebrating creativity on the Gold Coast. For students, it offers a powerful environment to practise academic enquiry, expand vocabulary, and experience Australian art and culture firsthand.
During the guided visit, students explored three gallery spaces, including the Showcase: Surge ceramics collection. Led by knowledgeable HOTA staff, students engaged deeply with each exhibit – asking thoughtful questions and making strong personal connections to the artworks. Many found one piece that particularly moved them, from fossil-like ceramic relics to shimmering coastal forms that imagined the aftermath of extreme weather. These reflective moments sparked rich discussions and helped students develop the analytical and critical-thinking skills central to the AEAP curriculum.

This excursion forms part of BROWNS’ immersive approach to academic English. The AEAP program prepares students for success in university and vocational study by strengthening their research skills, academic writing, presentation skills, and confidence in engaging with complex ideas. Experiences like HOTA give students valuable opportunities to apply these skills beyond the classroom, connecting language learning with real-world contexts.
We ended the visit at the rooftop, taking in the stunning panoramic views of Surfers Paradise from above. The afternoon was filled with curiosity, conversation, and creativity.
At BROWNS, we believe learning thrives when students feel inspired. HOTA provided the ideal backdrop for our AEAP cohort to explore, question, and connect, all while growing as confident academic communicators.
