As part of our IELTS Exam Preparation course at BROWNS English Language School (BROWNS), our students recently had the opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting outdoor English lesson at the Broadwater Parklands on the Gold Coast. The experience aims to enhance English communication skills through real-world tasks, while also helping connect with the local environment and each other. Below, Serena, one of our IELTS students, reflects on the day’s activities and what she learned.
On 16 May 2025, we participated in a fun and interactive hunt at the Broadwater Parklands (Southport). The goal was to complete a series of tasks as a group, such as taking pictures and recording videos in different parts of the park. Some of the tasks included sitting on colourful benches, taking pictures of at least three different birds, and recording a video of two group members explaining the park rules. We also had to find and take photos in front of three different monuments and identify a specific flower. As we explored, we were asked to take a photo with boats in the background, photograph at least ten different trees, and take a group picture in front of a wooden structure.
Another challenge was to take a picture in front of the cafe and record a video of one member presenting both the cafe and the park. The activity encouraged teamwork, observation, and creativity. After completing all of the tasks, we had to return the hunt sheet to our teacher to show what we had accomplished.
At the beginning, we started to answer a few questions on a worksheet by looking at the information signs placed around the park. This helped us learn more about the area, such as its natural environment, local wildlife, and the history of the Gold Coast.
