Riverlife and More: Week 4 of JHP in Brisbane
Week 4 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) at BROWNS Brisbane was filled with Australian culture, hands-on learning, and outdoor adventures. Students built their vocabulary, practiced descriptive language, and explored the city while making new memories together. Let’s take a look at the highlights from another exciting week:
Monday, August 4 – Welcome & Australian Movie Afternoon
We kicked off the week by welcoming new students and celebrating with a cosy movie-and-popcorn afternoon. The film selection featured Australian favourites such as Back to the Outback and Paper Planes. It was a hit — students relaxed, laughed, and shared their thoughts in English afterwards.
Tuesday, August 5 – School of the Air & Paper Plane Design Challenge
In the morning, students learned about the fascinating history of Alice Springs School of the Air, an innovative solution for educating children in remote Australia. From its humble beginnings in 1951 using radio waves to today’s satellite technology, the story showcased Aussie ingenuity and resilience.
In the afternoon, creativity took flight in a paper plane design competition — and the winning plane soared above the rest!
Wednesday, August 6 – Holidays & the Wheel of Brisbane
Morning lessons explored holidays and sightseeing vocabulary. Students wrote postcards, shared travel memories, and planned their dream European vacations.
In the afternoon, the class visited the Wheel of Brisbane, enjoying spectacular city views and practicing their descriptive language in a real-life setting.
Thursday, August 7 – Talking About Food & Bowling Fun
The day began with delicious discussions, as students learned to describe flavours, textures, and meals in English. They swapped favourite dishes from their home countries and compared tastes using descriptive adjectives.
The afternoon was all about friendly competition at the bowling alley — a perfect mix of language practice and laughter.
Friday, August 8 – Free Time, Hobbies & Aussie Picnic
Morning activities focused on hobbies and unusual pastimes from around the world, with teachers encouraging students to expand their range of adjectives beyond the basics.
In the afternoon, students enjoyed a picnic at the park featuring classic Aussie treats — Anzac biscuits, fairy bread, and Vegemite on crackers. It was a fun, flavourful way to connect with Australian culture while relaxing with friends.
Saturday, August 9 – Riverlife Adventure
Week 4 ended with an action-packed day at Riverlife Adventure Centre, one of Brisbane’s most exciting outdoor activity hubs. Students tried abseiling, laser tag, and kayaking, applying their adjective skills to describe the experience as wet, fun, and even world-conquering! It was the perfect way to connect with Brisbane’s active lifestyle while building confidence in English.
