Primary Holiday Program

The first week of the Brisbane Primary Holiday Program (PHP) was packed with exciting activities and valuable learning experiences. Our young learners had the opportunity to make new friends, explore Australian culture, and develop their English skills through interactive lessons and fun-filled excursions. Each day brought a unique theme, designed to engage students and help them build confidence in their communication abilities while enjoying everything Brisbane has to offer.

Monday, 13 January 2025 About Me
After participating in getting-to-know-each-other activities, we created our own Class Rules Chart to follow at BROWNS to ensure we all have a safe and worthwhile experience. The afternoon buzzed with camaraderie as students engaged in trivia focusing on the theme of Australia and other spirited games, competing for enticing prizes, tasting authentic Australian sweet treats—the famous Caramello Koalas—and creating friendship groups.

Tuesday, 14 January 2025 – My Town
With “Schooling” as one of the central themes, students absorbed essential classroom vocabulary, gained insights into Australian classrooms, shared their favourite school subjects, and compared educational experiences. The students loved sharing their hometown backgrounds and comparing them to their experience in Brisbane so far. The afternoon was dedicated to a visit to the local fun venue “Holey Moley Golf Club,” treating our students to an active round of mini golf. Subsequently, a walking trip through Brisbane city added to the day’s excitement.

Wednesday, 15 January 2025 – Cooking
Wednesday held a special focus for our younger students on their own familiar theme of “My Family.” In class, they engaged in lively discussions, sharing heartfelt stories about their family members while proudly creating family trees. The morning session involved examining vocabulary and phrases used in the art of cooking. Students loved sharing and discussing their favourite foods and recipes. The afternoon session was spent individually following a recipe to create an all-time favourite Australian dessert—Mini Chocolate Ripple Cakes. This proved to be a massive hit with students, who enjoyed their own delicious chocolatey creation during break time on Thursday.

Thursday, 16 January 2025 – Hobbies and FreeTime
Thursday greeted our students with an opportunity to share their personal interests from a wide selection of categories—food, games, music, books, etc. In addition to using modal verbs such as “must,” “have to,” “can’t,” and “can,” the students later acquired practical knowledge of road safety and familiarised themselves with street regulations, including traffic lights, protocols, etiquette, and street signs. The afternoon provided a real-world application of their newfound knowledge as students ventured to the South Bank Ferry for a river trip, followed by Happy Pops ice creams in the city. They effectively practised the phrases acquired in the morning within an authentic setting.

Friday, 17 January 2025 – Graffiti
The week finished on a spirited note with a focus on “Graffiti” and street artwork. Students immersed themselves in discussions about various topics they felt passionate about and created their own images. The younger students enjoyed organising their daily routines and playing games that identified the meaning of common phrasal verbs. A reflection activity to share the highlights of the week and create sentences was rewarding. Post-lessons, Roma Street Gardens transformed into a playground of fun and relaxation, where students participated in small games, socialised, and enjoyed the warmth and fresh air of the park.

Saturday, 18 January 2025 – Sea World
Saturday marked a day of unparalleled excitement as our students embarked on a memorable journey to Sea World. This renowned theme park offered a day brimming with adrenaline-pumping rides, captivating shows, and immersive attractions inspired by the sea. From heart-racing roller coasters to dazzling entertainment spectacles, students revelled in a water adventure like no other. Laughter echoed through the air as they encountered beloved sea creatures. Amid the thrill and wonder, friendships deepened as students shared exhilarating experiences and formed lasting memories against the backdrop of this captivating ocean-themed amusement park.

As the first week of our Primary Holiday Program comes to a close, students have created wonderful memories, learned new skills, and formed lasting friendships. From fun-filled activities to exciting excursions, it’s been an incredible start to their journey. Stay tuned and Join us next week as we share all the exciting moments from week two of the program!
