Brisbane Junior Holiday Program in March 2025
Welcome to the recap of Brisbane‘s dynamic Week 1 of the Junior Holiday Program in March at BROWNS English Language School. We are looking forward to a fantastic week that will start the making memories and friendships to last a lifetime.
Monday, 24th March 2025: Geography
The students’ first day of class was really fun, and we had the opportunity to learn more about each other and start to form lasting friendships. We were shown some interesting facts about Australia and learned about its geography, main cities and attractions, native animals and Aussie slang. We created in groups posters – ‘Australia’. In the afternoon we played trivia and competed to win typical Australian prizes, such as koalas and chocolate.
Tuesday, 25th March 2025: Free Time and Hobbies
To start our morning session, we focused on the theme of free time activities and hobbies. We shared our chosen activities, which ranged from sleeping, reading books to travelling with family. Vocabulary revolved around likes and dislikes and variations of these words. We practiced speaking for 1 minute on a random topic of free time choices. We created individual Hobby posters and presented them to the class, highlighting the diversity of interests.
Our afternoon was spent at Strike Bowling in the city. It was a terrific time where we laughed the time away whist showing our skills on the bowling lanes.
Wednesday, 26th March 2025: Cooking
Pizza is always a popular snack, so we engaged in lively discussions about toppings. We created individual questionnaires to ask other classes about their choices. The morning session involved examining vocabulary and phrases used in the art of cooking. Students loved sharing and discussing foods and recipes.
The afternoon session was spent individually following a recipe to create an all-time favourite Australian cake – The Lamington. This proved a massive hit with students; it was so fun mixing the chocolate, jam, cream and coconut to sponge cake. They then sat in groups to enjoy their own yummy chocolatey creations.
Thursday, 27th March 2025: Sightseeing
Today’s vocabulary and common phrases were based on Tourism – popular landmarks and attractions. The students compared two theme park brochures and what they individually offer. Using key question words (when, where etc.) we completed in partners worksheets to identify the best word for the holiday-themed questions and had conversations in groups about holiday venues.
In the afternoon, we explored the city of Brisbane, searching for the perfect souvenirs to take home. We visited Happy Pops Ice Creams in the city, effectively practicing the phrases acquired in class within an authentic setting. To complete our tour, we visited the Brisbane Library and explored all the different services it offers and had a quiet time reading in an alcove.
Friday, 28th March 2025: Australian Culture
Today, we reflected on our adventures to date. We made an Australian postcard to take home to a loved one. The students wrote about their own experiences so far in Brisbane and their hopes for the next couple of days. We set up a mini movie theatre environment and together watched Disney movie, including enjoying popcorn treats.
Our theme of the day is Australian culture, which was appropriate as we were looking forward to a traditional BBQ at Roma Street Gardens. As well as socializing, standing and cooking around the BBQ, we shared a sausage with sauce and bread and salads.
Saturday, 29th March 2025:
On a very rainy day we ventured on a thrilling trip to Movie World theme park equipped with rain jackets and umbrellas. Students jumped on board a minibus at 9am and headed down to the Gold Coast for a fun day. Everyone had the opportunity to meet beloved characters from their favourite movies and experience the adrenaline rush of the rides. The students had an incredible time exploring the park, enjoying the rides and attractions, and interacting with others. It was a perfect end to an engaging and educational week.
We had a fantastic week at BROWNS! We made great friends, learnt about some interesting topics and explored more of what Brisbane has to offer! From learning new vocabulary to practicing our speaking and listening skills and even writing reflections. We shared such an educational and entertaining week.
