Collingwood Children’s Farm and More: Week 4 of PSP+ in Melbourne
Week 4 of the Primary School Preparation Plus (PSP+) program at BROWNS Melbourne was packed with science experiments, creative projects, and cultural adventures — all designed to help students build confidence in English while exploring the world around them. Each morning’s lessons linked vocabulary and grammar to the afternoon’s hands-on activities, giving students the language tools they needed to communicate, create, and collaborate. Here’s how the week unfolded:
Monday, August 5 – Space, Theatre & The Three Little Pigs Challenge
We launched into the week with a Space theme, learning key vocabulary for planets, astronauts, and life beyond Earth. Students practised action verbs through lively theatre performances, then switched to maths with a focus on perimeters and 3D shapes. In the afternoon, the science skills came out for a Three Little Pigs–inspired challenge — designing and building houses that could withstand the “big bad wolf” (a powerful fan). The day was a mix of creativity, engineering, and laughter as teams tested their designs.
Tuesday, August 6 – Grammar, Shadows & Melbourne Museum
The morning began with grammar activities, sharpening sentence structure and expanding vocabulary. This was followed by a hands-on science session where students explored light and shadows and engineered mini catapults. In the afternoon, we headed to the Melbourne Museum, where history, culture, and science exhibits sparked curiosity. Students described artefacts, asked questions in English, and shared what they learned with classmates.
Wednesday, August 7 – Geography, HASS & DIY Fashion Show
We travelled through time and across continents in the morning, learning about the space race, comparing schools in the past and present, and exploring the history and design of castles. In the afternoon, creativity took centre stage with a DIY Fashion Show. Using materials from around the school, students designed outfits, then walked the runway while narrating their designs in English. It was a colourful, confidence-boosting event that blended language practice with self-expression.
Thursday, August 8 – Creative Writing & Ice Skating
Thursday was all about storytelling. Students reimagined the ending of Little Red Riding Hood, worked on correcting and improving sentences, and even planned what they would take with them on a trip to the moon. In the afternoon, it was time for some cool fun — literally — at the ice skating rink. Some students glided across the ice with ease, while others found their balance step by step, supported by plenty of cheers from friends.
Friday, August 9 – Castles, Drama & Holey Moley
We began the day by building castles, applying what we had learned earlier in the week about medieval structures. Drama activities followed, where students acted out scenes from their rewritten Little Red Riding Hood stories. The afternoon brought an exciting visit to Holey Moley Mini Golf, where quirky themed holes kept everyone entertained. Friendly competition and teamwork were in full swing.
Saturday, August 10 – Collingwood Children’s Farm
We wrapped up the week with a visit to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. Students learned about farm animals, their habitats, and how farmers care for them. Meeting goats, sheep, cows, and chickens up close gave a hands-on dimension to our discussions about nature and sustainability. It was a peaceful, wholesome way to end an action-packed week.
This week was a perfect balance of classroom learning, creative exploration, and real-world experiences. From acting out fairy tales to exploring museum exhibits, building castles to skating on ice, our PSP+ students grew not just in English skills but also in problem-solving, collaboration, and confidence. We’re so proud of their progress and can’t wait to see what next week brings!
