Gold Coast Junior Holiday Program for Kids | January-February 2025
G’day! Week 1 marked the first week of our January-February 2025 Junior Holiday Program on the Gold Coast, and it was an exciting start. Filled with lively discussions and creative storytelling, each day brought unique experiences that immersed our students in the vibrant culture and language of Australia and the Gold Coast. Welcome Week focused on themes of Australia, from geography to food to Aussie slang. Students participated in various activities, including a VR experience, mini golf, and a BBQ where they met other students studying at BROWNS English Language School (BROWNS). The week concluded with a visit to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where students were able to get up close to some of Australia’s most loved animals. It was a week packed with learning, laughter, and memorable moments.
Monday, 13th January 2025:
We started the week by welcoming new faces, spending the first hour getting to know each other, chatting, and sharing smiles.
The topic for the day was “Australian Geography,” so we began with a class discussion about flags of the world and famous landmarks in our own countries. We continued the discussion and learned about various landmarks and locations in Australia. We then worked as a class to put together a puzzle that was a map of Australia. This helped us create our own map of Australia with important landmarks and states/capitals. The afternoon concluded with a trivia competition on assorted topics and some delicious prizes. It was an enriching start to the week.
Tuesday, 14th January 2025:
On Tuesday, the topic was “Australian Animals,” so we started the class by discussing the many unique animals that live in Australia. We read about koalas, kangaroos, and even emus. After learning about so many new animals, we curated a list of animals we wanted to see on our Saturday excursion. We wrapped up the class with a “What Animal Am I?” charades game.
In the afternoon, we caught the tram and headed to Holey Moley Golf Club, where we played mini golf! It was a blast!
Wednesday, 15th January 2025:
“Cooking” was the topic for today, so we warmed up by sharing our favourite foods and explaining why we love them. We learned new vocabulary related to cooking and typical Australian cuisine. We then found our favourite recipe and shared it with the class. After the break, we went to Woolies to buy some ingredients and made some delicious chocolate spiders.
It was a day full of creativity and fun, trying new foods together!
Thursday, 16th January 2025:
On Thursday, we started the class with a speed list icebreaker on our new topic, “Daily Routines.” Students had 2 minutes to brainstorm as many routines as possible and competed to see who could produce the most. We learned new vocabulary and grammar related to daily routines and useful phrases. We then shared our own daily routines and compared them with our classmates.
In the afternoon, we met up with some High School Preparation (HSP) students and went to a Virtual Reality experience in Surfers Paradise. It was an unreal experience!
Friday, 17th January 2025:
Friday’s topic was “Sports,” so we began the class by discussing various sports we know and played a Kahoot quiz to learn new vocabulary related to different types of sports and sports equipment. We then combined with the HSP students and played ‘Find Someone Who,’ engaging with lots of other students!
In the afternoon, we put together a BBQ in the park with our new HSP friends and enjoyed some tasty food and fun games. We learned to play Bocce and had a blast!
Saturday, 18th January 2025:
To end the week, we spent the day at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, a zoological garden with hundreds of animals. The group explored the different habitats and saw a variety of species. A memorable moment was getting to pet the kangaroos! It was a thrilling day of discovery and excitement, allowing everyone to experience the unique animals of Australia and the world in a fun and educational environment!
As we wrap up this eventful week, we’re already looking forward to the adventures that await us next week. From more exciting themes to fun-filled excursions, there’s so much more to explore and enjoy. Be sure to check back for our next blog post, where we’ll share all the details of our upcoming experiences and continue this incredible journey together!
