English on the Gold Coast
It’s the final week of our January–February 2025 Gold Coast Junior Holiday Program, and what an incredible journey it has been. Students have spent the past few weeks improving their English, making new friends, and experiencing the best of Australia through engaging lessons and exciting activities. From hands-on cooking and cultural art to bowling, shopping, and theme park adventures, this week was a perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable program. Here’s a look back at the highlights of Week 4.
Monday, 3rd February 2025:
Monday was all about food. Students had a great time learning about different types of food around the world. It was an amazing chance for them to learn this new vocabulary full of culture. After this, it was time to learn about recipes and kitchen utensils to get ready for cooking.
The afternoon activity was full of fun. Students worked together in groups to prepare the famous Australian Lamingtons. They had to use all the previous vocabulary to cook their own recipe while recording videos of the whole process. At the end, they shared their results with other classmates and other students and teachers at BROWNS.

This morning’s lesson was on hobbies and interests. Students talked about leisure activities they regularly engage in and their favourites. The class learned about verb-noun collocations when discussing these activities. Students practiced a conversation for making plans; including agreeing on what activity, where and when it would take place. Finally, students filled out a schedule for the week with activities they planned to do with their classmates.
Today’s activity was at Strike Bowling in Surfers Paradise. Students were excited to compete with their classmates and crash some pins. It took some time for students to become familiar with the right size ball, their entry and release; however, all students were able to improve their bowling skill in a short time and displayed a sense of achievement and fun throughout the game.
Wednesday, 5th February 2025:
For our lesson today, students explored life in The Outback. First, they contemplated life as a child in The Outback; including the risks and challenges faced. Next the class identified some important vocabulary associated with life in The Outback. Then we read a story about a correspondence school called ‘The School of The Air’, which supports students in the centre of Australia. Finally, students reflected on their own educational experience and what makes it unique.
Students investigated Aboriginal culture, specifically art, in this afternoon’s activity. We followed a brief explanation of the meaning of dot and x-ray paintings that included the significance of symbols, images and colours. Students demonstrated their creativity and interpretation of Aboriginal Art by creating their own dot paintings. They experimented with symbols, images and colours to produce their own piece of art.
Thursday, 6th February 2025:
The topic today was ‘shopping’. The class started out discussing types of shops, then extended to what items we can buy from supermarkets; which led students to learn about how to express quantities of everyday items. After that, students practiced functional language used in a shop-keeper-customer-interaction. Finally, the class had a role-play mingle activity, where students played a customer or shopkeeper and had to fulfil the role stated on their instruction paper, while using the language practiced in the previous activity.
This afternoon the class visited Surfers Paradise to go shopping and utilise the language skills learned in this morning’s lesson. Students also followed a scavenger hunt format; photographing different shops – bag stores, pharmacists, supermarkets, shoe shops, for example – and souvenir shopping. Students enjoyed the opportunity to walk around and do some window shopping, identifying different stores and making some purchases.
Friday, 7th February 2025:
The last day of the Junior Holiday Program was simply amazing. Students had the chance to learn about sports and culture from all over the world in a very fun way. They enjoyed a class full of exciting activities about different countries and their unique sports. They spoke about their favourite sports and also the places they want to visit in the future, using the vocabulary learnt previously.
In the afternoon, it was time to start saying goodbye to their kind classmates. Students had the chance to write messages on their friends’ certificates, take pictures and spend some time together. At the end, students enjoyed a Class Party with pizza, drinks and a lot of fun games. It was the perfect way to finish the indoor activities of the Junior Holiday Program this year.
Saturday, 8th February 2025:
Saturday’s excursion was full of fun and learning. We started the day with engaging games before heading to Australia’s biggest theme park, Dreamworld, which was a great opportunity for students to practise English and build rapport.
At Dreamworld, students experienced the most thrilling rollercoasters together. This time, their favourite ride was the Steel Taipan rollercoaster, which they described as SENSATIONAL.
On our way back, we enjoyed a chat and a snack, and said our farewells to the students who were returning home on Sunday.
As we say goodbye to our January–February 2025 Gold Coast Junior Holiday Program, we celebrate the friendships, memories, and learning experiences that made this program so special. From exciting excursions to hands-on classroom activities, our students embraced every moment with enthusiasm. While this chapter comes to a close, we’re already looking forward to welcoming new students for our next Junior Holiday Program in March. Stay tuned for more unforgettable experiences ahead!
