Learn English in Brisbane: Week 2 of Our Junior Holiday Program

Week 2 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) at BROWNS Brisbane continued with energy, creativity, and a whole lot of English. As students settled into their routines, they explored new aspects of Australian culture through interactive lessons, hands-on projects, and exciting real-world experiences. Here are the highlights from another unforgettable week:

Monday, July 21 – New Friends & Lamingtons

Monday was a special day to welcome new students joining the program! Everyone took part in ice-breaker activities and shared fun facts about themselves. In the kitchen, the cultural discovery continued with a cooking session featuring lamingtons — the classic Australian sponge cake coated in melted chocolate and coconut. Students practiced recipe vocabulary and instructions while baking and tasting this delicious treat.

Tuesday, July 22 – Indigenous Art & Literature

Tuesday’s lessons offered a deeper connection with Australia’s First Nations heritage. Students explored Indigenous literature, learning about Dreamtime stories and traditional narratives. In the afternoon, creativity flourished as they painted in Indigenous styles using dots, symbols, and natural colours — all while discussing the meanings behind the patterns and stories in English.

Wednesday, July 23 – Grammar & Excursions

The morning was dedicated to grammar, with students strengthening their skills in past simple, present simple, and present perfect. Through games and group practice, they learned how to talk about their experiences and routines. In the afternoon, the program split for two exciting activities:

  • JHP 1 students enjoyed arcade games, using English to play, earn, and trade tickets for prizes.
  • JHP 2, 3, and 4 visited the Kurilpa Museum, where they engaged with exhibits and used English to describe animals, artefacts, and stories of Queensland’s past.

Thursday, July 24 – Aussie Animal Adventure

It was all about Aussie wildlife on Thursday! One classroom transformed into a giant scavenger hunt, with over 70 hidden animal pictures for students to find and identify. This fun challenge boosted their vocabulary and observation skills.

In the afternoon, students met real reptiles — including snakes, lizards, and even a small crocodile — during a special visit from Wild Rangers. With wide eyes and brave hearts, students asked questions, followed instructions, and interacted safely with these fascinating creatures.

Friday, July 25 – Reflect & Write

Friday morning offered a moment to reflect. Students wrote personal diary entries about their time in Australia and shared how their weekends here feel different from back home. This writing session helped them consolidate vocabulary, express feelings, and build confidence in storytelling.

It was a beautiful way to wrap up a week filled with adventure, learning, and connection.

Saturday, July 26 – Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The week ended with a magical visit to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Students hand-fed kangaroos, spotted sleepy koalas, and even caught a glimpse of a platypus! Surrounded by nature, they practiced their English while learning about native Australian wildlife in one of Brisbane’s most beloved destinations.
