The Best Junior English Holiday Programs in Melbourne

Hello and welcome to week 4 of Melbourne’s Primary and Junior Holiday Program. This week has been a fun-filled and educational week with exciting trips and topics. We practiced our listening, grammar and speaking skills through discussions, quizzes and worksheets. We have covered a range of topics this week from Australian geography, transport and what we do when we hang out with our friends. We have practiced our golf skills, been shopping and gone head-to-head in games and a scavenger hunt.

We’ve had a great week working together and making memories. We have enjoyed meeting more new students and getting to know each other better. Every day has been an opportunity to learn and get to know Melbourne more!

Monday, 3rd February 2025:

We started our week by welcoming some new students into our classes. It was great to get to know each other and learn more about different parts of the world. We then kicked off our learning with a quiz about Australian geography to see how much we already knew. We all knew an impressive amount, but we did some reading about different places, parts and landmarks in Australia to increase our knowledge. We practiced our comprehension and writing skills by making fact files all about Australia. We even made presentations together on different Australian cities and decided where we would most like to go after Melbourne. We had a great time learning more about the country we’re in and working collaboratively to increase our understanding.

After lunch, we gathered a range of games to play and had a great afternoon learning some new games (like Twister) and teaching each other our favourite ones. Jenga was great fun, uno was competitive and chess got us thinking.

Tuesday, 4th February 2025:

On Tuesday our topic was all about hanging out with friends. This was a great topic and enabled us to share more about our hobbies and how we spend our free time. We began our day thinking of as many different free-time activities as possible, and we had some great answers. We then got stuck into some grammar and vocabulary to help us expand our explanations and communication skills. We then honed our grammar, writing and speaking skills by writing about a day out we had had recently with our friends. We shared our stories with each other and wrote about each other’s experiences. We then engaged our competitive sides to see which team had the best acting skills with a class game of charades. It was great to learn more about each other and have such a great opportunity to practice our grammar and learn more vocab.

In the afternoon, we went to play golf. We got into teams and went head-to-head to see who the ultimate golf pro was. There were a lot of contenders for the best. We played 18 rounds, got better each time and made some great memories.

Wednesday, 5th January 2025:

Wednesday was all about transport. We started our class by testing our listening and direction skills by following different directions such as ‘go straight’ and ‘pass the chair and turn right’. We learnt about different direction vocabulary and how to ask for directions politely using different modal verbs. We then planned a day trip around Melbourne to practice real-life transport options and directions. We choose two locations on a map and accompanying directions. We then practiced our speaking skills by sharing our directions with our classmates. It was a great way to learn more about Melbourne, how to use English in real-life situations and improve our speaking skills.

After lunch, we grabbed popcorn for a film afternoon. We voted and decided which film to watch. It was a relaxing afternoon, and we had a great time hanging out together.

Thursday, 6th January 2025:

Thursday’s topic was social media. We started our day with a discussion around what social media we use, which platforms are popular in our countries and what are the advantages and disadvantages of social media. It was a great opportunity to share our opinions and listen to others. We learnt a range of different vocab to use when talking about social media. We also honed our listening skills by listening to an expert on what are the pros and cons of social media. This was a great opportunity to talk about a familiar topic, learn some useful new words and phrases and listen to each other’s opinions.

After lunch, we went shopping at Melbourne’s famous Queen Victoria Market. We all had a great time browsing, buying and window shopping. We got some great souvenirs to help us remember our time in Melbourne. We even got to practice our money and speaking skills when we bought things at the market which was great.

Friday, 7th February 2025:

Today our topic was food taste. We got thinking by making an A-Z list of foods and using adjectives to describe these foods to our table. We then learnt a range of new adjectives to describe such as ‘bitter’, ‘sour’ and ‘raw’. We then read about a range of different cuisines from around the world and what flavours and tastes are important to these delicacies. We put this vocabulary into practice to describe to the class the flavours of the places that we come from. We learnt all about the flavours of Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese foods and learnt some great new words.

After lunch,h we headed to Flagstaff Gardens to enjoy the Melbourne weather and complete a scavenger hunt. We scoured the park looking for a range of things such as a butterfly, ants, something multicoloured and even dew drops on a leaf. It was challenging but we all found everything we needed.

Saturday, 8th February 2025:

We had a great weekend at LEGOLAND this week! We went on rides, explored some incredible Lego figures and looked at scenes of Melbourne made entirely of Lego. A highlight was making cars out of Lego and racing them to see who had the fastest. We also watched a short Lego film in 4D. It was a fun end to the week, and we all enjoyed spending more time together and making lasting memories.

Week 4 at BROWNS was a fantastic week. We made more friends from around the world, learnt a huge amount of new vocabulary and got to learn more about Australia and visited some more of Melbourne’s great attractions. We practiced speaking and listening through presentations and talking. We also had a lot of opportunities to learn more grammar and practice writing. We’ve also been on some great excursions this week where we’ve been able to channel our competitive sides, buy souvenirs and watch some new films. Being part of one of the best Junior English Holiday Programs in Melbourne has truly made this an unforgettable experience. Thank you to everyone for such a good week, we are looking forward to more learning and fun next week
