Junior Holiday Program: English Lessons and Excursions for International Students
Hello and welcome to week 5 of BROWNS’ Melbourne Junior Holiday Program recap. This week was our last week at BROWNS, so we made the most of our time together by going on some exciting trips, covering interesting topics and having an all-round good time. We practiced our listening, grammar and speaking skills through discussions, quizzes and worksheets. Our topics this week have ranged from Melbourne tourism, nature and life experiences. We also went on a trip to Melbourne’s iconic Skydeck, went climbing and finished the week with a party to say goodbye.
We’ve had a great week and end to the program. We have learnt a lot, visited some great places and made lasting memories and friends.
Monday, 10th February 2025:
We started our week with the exciting topic of Melbourne tourism. We got to practice our speaking, writing and grammar with this topic. We started with a quiz to see what we all knew about Melbourne already. We knew a lot because we have visited lots of places in Melbourne together. We marked on a map some of the most iconic Melbourne places, such as the Queen Victoria Market, the cricket ground and Fitzroy Garden. We then practiced our reading and comprehension by reading a pamphlet about what to do and places to visit in Melbourne. Taking inspiration from the pamphlet, map and our own experiences, we made our very own pamphlets for tourists. We chose some of our favorite landmarks, things to do and researched some interesting facts and history about Melbourne to make informative, eye-catching and well-researched pamphlets. We had great fun and consolidated our knowledge about Melbourne.
After lunch we gathered for a table tennis tournament. We played different rounds to see who could make it to the final. Everyone played fantastically, we had great fun, and our winner got a prize.
Tuesday, 11th February 2025:
On Tuesday our topic was daily routines. This was a great topic and enabled us to share more about ourselves and practice some useful grammar and phrases. We began our day by learning all about different vocabulary and different parts of the daily routine. We then focused on some grammar and put this into practice with different worksheets and quizzes. We then learnt about journals and diaries we practiced lots of grammar and vocabulary and reading. Then we took inspiration from what we had read and learnt and wrote our journal entries for a memorable day we’d had recently. We shared our great writing with each other so we could all see how well we’d done.
In the afternoon, we went to Melbourne’s iconic Skydeck. We went up to level 88 of a huge skyscraper. We could see all the way across Melbourne. The views were fantastic. We stood at the windows and looked at how tiny the people, trams and boats were from up so high. We had a great afternoon together.
Wednesday, 12th January 2025:
Wednesday was all about sports and exercise. We started our day by learning about extreme sports. It was very interesting, and we discovered some new sports such as caving, rafting and parkour. We decided which ones we would like to try and the ones we wouldn’t. After practicing our listening and vocabulary we undertook some research about the range of benefits of exercise. These ranged from reading about our heart, teamwork and sense of achievement. We brought this all together by making posters about the importance of exercise which we could display in the classroom. It was a great topic which enabled us to practice different language skills, learn about new sports and express our opinions.
After lunch, we had a great time crafting. We had lots of beads and threads and made our own bracelets. Everyone loved this activity, and we made some beautiful jewellery for ourselves and our family.
Thursday, 13th January 2025:
Thursday’s topic was nature. We learnt all about the lifecycle of a frog which was fascinating. We also learnt lots of new vocabulary which we could use to describe different parts of nature. We had the opportunity to watch some famous nature documentaries which we used to practice our listening. We also shared about the local nature in our own countries and shared interesting facts we already knew.
After lunch, we conquered our fears and went rock climbing. We put into practice all we knew about extreme sports and exercise and had a great time seeing how high we could get. It was so much fun, and we made some great memories together.
Friday, 14th February 2025:
We ended our week learning about life experiences. We started our day by practicing the grammar we used to talk about life experiences. We then put this into practice and shared with each other some of the experiences we have had such as the countries we’ve visited, the foods we’ve tried and the sports we’ve played. It was a great opportunity to learn some difficult grammar and learn more about each other. We put this into writing as we wrote about our life experiences and things we would like to try and the places we would like to go in the future. It was a great topic for our last day together.
After lunch, we had a party. We put some music on and made some banana splits. This was great fun and tasty too. We made them for ourselves and for each other too. We also played some games and had a great time hanging out with our new friends.
Saturday, 15th February 2025:
We had a fun weekend at the zoo. We saw some amazing animals such as lions, zebras and monkeys. It was a great day out and we made some lasting memories together. The zoo was the perfect place for our last trip together, we had so much fun, and it was so exciting.
Week 5 at BROWNS was fantastic. We had the opportunity to get to know each other better through engaging topics and exciting excursions for international students around Melbourne. These trips, combined with lessons focused on speaking, listening, and vocabulary, made for a perfect end to our holiday program.
