Melbourne Museum and More: Week 4 of JHP in Melbourne
Week 4 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) at BROWNS Melbourne was filled with hands-on challenges, cultural discoveries, and plenty of chances to practise English in real-world settings. Each morning’s lessons focused on B1-level vocabulary and grammar linked to that day’s theme, giving students the language they needed to dive into the afternoon’s activities with confidence. Here’s what the week looked like:
Monday, August 5 – Nature & Wildlife + The Egg Drop Challenge
The week began with the theme of Nature and Wildlife. In class, students expanded their vocabulary on animals, habitats, and the environment, while also practising descriptive sentences and comparative structures. In the afternoon, teamwork and problem-solving took centre stage with the Egg Drop Challenge — students designed and built protective structures to keep their eggs intact when dropped from a height. There was plenty of laughter, creativity, and just a little suspense as the eggs made their final plunge.
Tuesday, August 6 – Weather + Melbourne Museum
Tuesday’s lessons focused on Weather vocabulary and expressions, from sunny spells to stormy skies. Students practised discussing forecasts, seasonal activities, and how weather affects daily life. In the afternoon, we headed to the Melbourne Museum, where students explored exhibitions on science, culture, and natural history. They had opportunities to use their new language skills to describe artefacts, ask questions, and share discoveries with classmates.
Wednesday, August 7 – At a Café + DIY Fashion Show
With the theme At a Café, students learned useful phrases for ordering food and drinks, describing flavours, and what kind of language can be used in a relaxed social setting- even some australian slang. In the afternoon, it was all about creativity with a DIY Fashion Show. Using craft materials, students designed and showcased their own outfits, narrating their creations in English as they walked the “runway.”
Thursday, August 8 – Hanging Out with Friends + Holey Moley
Thursday’s topic, Hanging Out with Friends, gave students the chance to practise conversational English, make plans, and express preferences. In the afternoon, we headed to Holey Moley, a mini-golf experience like no other. Students navigated quirky, themed holes while chatting, laughing, and sharing friendly competition.
Friday, August 9 – Cities + Ice Skating
The week’s final classroom theme was Cities. Students learned vocabulary for landmarks, public transport, and urban life, then discussed famous cities around the world and even created our dream cities. In the afternoon, it was time to swap walking shoes for skates at the ice rink. For some, it was their first time on ice — an exciting test of balance and bravery, with plenty of encouragement (and gentle falls) along the way.
Saturday, August 10 – Collingwood Children’s Farm
We wrapped up the week with a day trip to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. Students met farm animals, learned about sustainable farming, and enjoyed the peaceful green surroundings. It was a relaxing and wholesome way to end a busy, language-filled week.
This week was a perfect blend of classroom learning and real-world fun. From protecting eggs to striking poses on the catwalk, visiting world-class museums to trying mini-golf and ice skating, our students not only grew in their English skills but also in confidence, creativity, and teamwork. We can’t wait for next week.
