Explore Melbourne Zoo with BROWNS’ Junior Holiday Program

Welcome back to our Junior Holiday Program. We’re excited to share the highlights of another fun-filled and educational week. Here’s a recap of the second week in Melbourne:

Monday, 22/07/2024
This week began meeting the new students, playing fun games to break the ice, and welcoming them to their new classmates and teachers.

Once we started the lesson, we focused on our topic, “Meals.” Therefore, we warmed up with a class discussion about how many meals we have per day, what we eat, and which one is our favourite, sharing our different food preferences. We also worked in groups, learning new vocabulary, and putting it into practice, playing some role-play games, acting like we were working in a restaurant.

During the afternoon, and based on today’s topic, we made some delicious lamingtons, and we also tried the famous toast with Vegemite and Fairy Bread.

Tuesday’s topic was focused on animals. So, we started the class in laughter as we were shown photos of different animals combined into one beast. The teacher was trying to deceive the class by making us believe that they were real Australian animals.

We read about Australian animals, and in groups, we created a poster of our favourite one to explain the most relevant characteristics and the funniest curiosities to the classmates.

The day finished with an amazing reptile visit, which allowed us to get to know some Australian animals up close, and even though some of us were a bit scared, we were able to touch them!

Wednesday, 24/07/2024

The Australian Aboriginal culture was the topic for today, so we enjoyed listening to dreamtime stories about creation myths and traditions! We also learned about aboriginal iconography, analyzing drawings, and trying to create our own paintings.

During the afternoon, we painted wooden boomerangs using dot-painting techniques while listening to the melodies of the didgeridoo, a traditional Australian Aboriginal music instrument.

Thursday, 25/07/2024

On Thursday, the topic was “Holidays,” so we explored the world of travel! We started the class discussing our last holidays, pointing to a world map the best and the worst destinations, and dreaming about where we would love to go. After the break, every student designed their dream holiday trip plan, choosing the destination, the activities, and budgeting. When we finished, we presented our plans to the other classmates, sharing interests and creativity!

After class today, we caught the tram, and we went to visit and enjoy the multiple exhibits of the National Gallery of Victoria. It was a day of creativity and global exploration!

Friday, 26/07/2024

Friday began with a class discussion about our favourite sports, sharing personal stories and preferences. After that, we learned new vocabulary about sports, which we practised through a game called “Run & Write,” where kids competed in two teams to write vocabulary words on the board. It was an exciting day, and everyone was excited for the afternoon activity!

So, after lunch, we went to practice our sports skills, going climbing! We learned to be the climber but also the helper of the climber. It was an incredibly fun challenge that made the time fly!

Saturday, 27/07/2024

The best way to end the week was by going to the Melbourne Zoo together. So, despite the rain, we had the best time exploring and seeing lots of different animals. We also could observe the Australian wildlife, and we really enjoyed meeting the quokkas, known as the happiest animals in the world!

The rainy weather couldn’t dampen our enthusiasm to explore the zoo with our best classmates and take funny pictures with the animals!

Overall, the second week of our Junior Holiday Program in Melbourne was a success, filled with learning, fun, and new experiences. We look forward to continuing this journey with our students in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more adventures next week.
