Exploring Cultures, Shopping, and City Life

Week 3 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) was full of energy, creativity, and real-world English practice. Students explored countries, shopping, transport, and friendship through games, role-plays, projects, and an exciting Melbourne excursion. Here’s what made this week special:

🌍 Tuesday: My Country
Tuesday’s lessons were all about countries and cultures

We began with fun warm-up activities, including unscrambling words and a “Can You Tell Me More?” speaking task, encouraging students to share ideas and build confidence in English.

Students then practised classroom language vocabulary and worked on speaking clearly through “Just Say It” activities. To keep things interactive, they played a Guess the Flag Kahoot and completed a country crossword, reinforcing new vocabulary in a fun way.

The teaching focus was on describing my country, learning useful words and phrases to talk about location, people, food, and culture. Students then put this into practice by writing about their own country and speaking with a partner.

The day finished with a creative Make a Movie activity, where students explored storytelling and imagination while continuing to practise English in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

🌍 Tuesday: My Country
Students shared about where they come from and learned about countries around the world. Warm-up activities included word unscrambles and a “Can You Tell Me More?” speaking task to build confidence.

They practised classroom language, played a Guess the Flag Kahoot, completed a country crossword, and learned vocabulary for describing their country. Students then wrote about their own country and spoke with a partner.

In pairs, they researched a new country and created a country poster, practising teamwork and presentation skills. The day ended with a fun Make a Movie activity, encouraging creativity and storytelling in English.

🛍️ Wednesday: Shopping & Clothes
Wednesday focused on shopping and clothing vocabulary. The day began with a country mingle warmer, getting students moving and speaking with different classmates.

Students then took part in a clothing run-around, naming items of clothing displayed around the room. After learning key shopping vocabulary using a One Stop English worksheet, they practised by ordering a shopping conversation and performing role-plays, building confidence in real-life speaking situations.

For the class project, students worked in pairs to invent a brand-new product. They drew diagrams, prepared short presentations, and presented their ideas to the class. Students listened carefully, took notes, and voted on the product they would most like to buy — a fun and engaging way to practise persuasive speaking and listening skills.

🚍 Thursday: Transport & Directions
Thursday’s lessons explored transport and giving directions. Students started with a transport survey and brainstormed different ways of getting around the city.

They learned transport vocabulary and grammar through worksheets and games, including a transport verbs Kahoot and a transport crossword

The focus then shifted to prepositions, with paired worksheet activities and a preposition drawing game, where students listened carefully to their partner’s instructions and drew pictures based on what they heard.

To finish the day, students learned how to give directions and practised by choosing a real location in Melbourne and writing their own directions on how to get there — connecting classroom learning to real-life situations.

👫 Friday: Friends, Fashion & Melbourne Exploration
Friday was all about friendship, collaboration, and fun. Students rehearsed together, strengthening communication and teamwork skills.

They enjoyed a lively Fashion Show, showing off outfits and practising descriptive language in a confident and supportive environment.

The week ended with an exciting excursion to Queen Victoria Market, where students explored one of Melbourne’s most famous landmarks and used English in authentic, real-world situations.
