Australian Adventures, Food, and Friendship

Week 4 of the Junior Holiday Program (JHP) was an exciting journey through Australian culture, social connections, and culinary exploration. Students discovered Australia’s geography, practiced directions, explored social media, and celebrated diverse food cultures. Here’s what made this week special:

 Monday: Australian Geography

Monday introduced students to the land Down Under with an engaging quiz: “What do you know about Australia?”

Students moved around the classroom finding facts and answers, then learned about Australia’s famous landmarks through a PowerPoint presentation. Working collaboratively, they completed an Australia fact file and presented on one Australian city as a team.

👫 Tuesday: Hanging Out with Friends

Tuesday was all about social language and spending time together. Students explored free time activities through Quizlet and an energetic A-Z challenge, then practiced vocabulary with a crossword.

The grammar focus was on using do, play, and go correctly with different activities. Students learned how to ask follow-up questions and practiced conversation skills with each other.

They then learned the past simple tense, wrote about a recent day out, and shared with a partner. The day ended with a lively game of charades.

🚍 Wednesday: Transport

Wednesday focused on navigating the city. Students matched pictures with direction words, then learned different ways of asking politely and practiced directions vocabulary through worksheets and gap-fill activities.

For hands-on practice, students worked with a map of Melbourne, creating directions from Browns English Language School. To consolidate learning, they played a fun post-it note game, giving their partner directions to hidden notes around the room.

📱 Thursday: Social Media

Thursday explored the digital world. Students discussed their use of social media and what platforms are popular in different countries, then examined the pros and cons in an open discussion.

They learned social media vocabulary through worksheets and watched a video about the pros and cons of social media. The day finished with a reading on “The Selfie Revolution,” practicing comprehension and discussion skills.

🍽️ Friday: Food Tastes & Melbourne Fun

Friday celebrated food and culture. Students tackled an A-Z foods challenge and practiced describing foods to their partners.

They learned food adjectives through a colourful presentation, explored different countries’ cuisines through a fact file activity, and listened to a BBC 6 Minute English episode about bitter foods and health.

The week finished with students writing about their own cuisine and sharing it with the class, celebrating the diversity in the room.

Beyond the classroom, Week 4 was packed with exciting activities: indoor games, Holey Moley mini golf, a movie and popcorn session, a shopping excursion, and an adventurous scavenger hunt!

✅ That’s a wrap on JHP Week 4!

Week 4 was filled with discovery, conversation, and cultural exchange. From exploring Australia’s geography to sharing food traditions, students continued to build confidence and connections while having fun every step of the way.
