Junior Holiday Program Melbourne

Family, Beach & Aussie Culture: BROWNS’ Junior Holiday Program Melbourne

Monday, 12/02/2024
Monday we started with a nice topic – we talked about family. First, we learned some vocabulary from family members. Then students played games to activate these words. When they felt more confident with the vocabulary, they were ready to draw their family tree and tell the class about their relatives. They also shared how they liked spending time with their siblings and parents. After the lessons, we played board games, cards, “Who am I” with superheroes, and Pictionary. It was a lovely day.

Nice and warm Tuesday was a perfect day to discuss the beach. To be more precise, we talked about beach safety. We started with revising some vocabulary. Then learners watched a few videos of Bondi Lifeguards’ rescues. We discussed the importance of the rules at the beach and students created beach safety posters. They also watched a video about the most famous Melbourne beaches. After that, we enjoyed an amazing city view at Melbourne Skydeck

On Wednesday students got to know indigenous culture. First, they read a few texts about Aboriginal Musical Instruments, Weapons, Food, Tribes, Languages and Culture. They found it really exciting. Then they worked with an aboriginal story, tried to complete the different pieces of it and then watched an animated film based on that story. Having this artistic mood in mind, pupils did dot painting after the classes. First, they illustrated famous stories from their own culture. Then they drew boomerangs in the style of aboriginal culture.

What is School of the Air? This was the question that students found the answer to on Thursday. Students read a text and watched a video about these famous schools in Australia, about their history and the present day. Learners are familiar with the concept of distant learning because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. They confessed they hadn’t liked that experience and preferred conventional schools. However, they found it useful and smart to run the Schools of the Air for children from outback Australia. In the afternoon, we went to ArtVO, where children had a chance to take many beautiful photos with amazing, sometimes even crazy, backgrounds.

Hard to believe, but on Friday students had their last classes! That’s why we had a farewell party, however, before that we talked about our last, but not least topic – sport. They learned some vocabulary, mostly verbs and sports equipment. Later, we played games to activate this vocabulary.

After that… the party began. We decided to make mug cakes again, because it was one of the funniest activities they had done during the program. Then we decorated the class with their paintings, posters and other works. Later, we  created small memory boxes using paper. Students kept different pictures, photos and notes about their experience in our holiday program in that box. We all will never forget these four weeks.

Saturday was the time to see koalas at Melbourne Zoo. Four hours of walking in a huge lovely park, dozens of amazing animals, nice lunch in a cafe – all of that was on our to-do list. Children took many photos. They were especially impressed by lemurs and snakes. It was a truly nice way to spend this sunny Saturday in Melbourne before saying goodbye to our school.

This brings us to the end of BROWNS’ January and February Junior Holiday Program. We are looking forward to welcoming a new group of students later this year in July-August. To find out more, visit https://brownsenglish.edu.au/english-courses/junior-program
