Day Trip to Moreton Island

Last Saturday, twelve of us set off on our BROWNS Day Trip to Moreton Island, Queensland!

Moreton Island is one of the largest sand islands in the world and one of the least disturbed environments on Australia’s east coast, so it is a must see for any students visiting Australia!

We started the bus trip nice and early with a 6am departure from the Gold Coast to get to the ferry. From the Ferry, we had a great view of the island and we even got to see some dolphins along the way.

As soon as we were off the ferry, we got straight into our snorkeling activity! Moreton Island has 15 shipwrecks that you can snorkel around, and it was so interesting to see a sunken ship up close. The shipwrecks look beautiful because they are covered in coral and surrounded by all the different kinds of fish that live in the wrecks.

Following the snorkeling, we all had lunch to fuel up for kayaking and sandboarding! As we kayaked to see the unsubmerged parts of the shipwrecks, we fed and watched the fish through our see-through kayaks.

After kayaking, we got in the 4WD bus that took us to sandboarding. Moreton Island is only accessible by 4WD vehicles, so we travelled through the bumpy bushland to get to the sand dunes which was fun. Sandboarding at some of the world’s biggest sand dunes was very memorable, and we all tried different tricks to get the furthest on our sandboards.

We finished off the day with a swim in the beautiful blue ocean to cool off before the ferry trip back.

Moreton Island is definitely one of the most beautiful islands to visit in Australia where you can do a lot of fun activities. If you like 4WD, snorkeling or sandboarding, you will love a day trip to Moreton Island!
